Editor's Note

September 23, 2026Daily record →

Yesterday was a relatively calm session, but volatility behavior remained unusual. Despite the market decline, implied volatility in the far upside tail continued to rise, with the sharpest increase occurring late in the day.

For most of the session, the portfolio showed a substantial profit that more than offset the previous day’s loss. By the close, however, the late surge in upper-tail volatility had materially repriced the far upside wing and reduced most of that gain.

This is an unusual pattern for a relatively modest move in the underlying market and may indicate that participants are preparing for a more significant event-risk regime. It is too early to draw a firm conclusion. We will continue to monitor the volatility surface and, in particular, whether this tail repricing proves persistent.
