Editor’s Note

The market is rising, and so is volatility. Since September 18 the Nasdaq-100 has gained about 4%, while the VXN volatility index rose from 19.3 to 22.5 points (October 1) and stood at 21.2 on October 2. Options usually cheapen in a calm advance. This time the opposite is happening.

The market itself is moving quietly: realized volatility on the Nasdaq-100 over the last nine sessions is around 10–11% annualized, half the level of VXN. Options are pricing a move that has not yet materialized.

It is the wings, not the center, that are getting more expensive. On Monday, at-the-money implied volatility on January QQQ options was little changed, while implied volatility on Calls 5–6% above the market rose by about 0.2 points. Buyers are paying for the fear of missing the rally: SpotGamma estimates that Call-wing skew on the Nasdaq-100 is elevated, though still short of its May extremes.

This is an unfavorable regime for volatility sellers: losses come not from market moves but from the repricing of options. What we are watching next: if realized volatility stays low, the premium should deflate. The risk is an accelerating rally in which Calls continue to get more expensive.

Technical Analysis

Nasdaq set a second consecutive record on October 5. QQQ rose 0.88% to a record close of 756.20 after an all-time intraday high of 756.92, and the Nasdaq-100 gained 0.87% to 31,076.44; the S&P 500 gained 0.66% to 7,773.95 and SPY 0.67% to 774.83, within 0.39% of its record close.

QQQ is 3.64% above its 20-day (729.64), 5.28% above its 50-day (718.26) and 12.98% above its 200-day, with both shorter averages rising faster than on Friday; RSI(14) stands at 68.5, just below overbought. The session low of 749.08 held above the former 748.35 resistance, confirming Friday's breakout.

Participation broadened. Equal-weight QQEW gained 1.19%, outpacing QQQ, and the share of Nasdaq-100 members above their 50-day rose to 48.51% from 43.56%; in the S&P 500 the share above the 20-day jumped to 34.73%. Volume, however, fell to 25.60 million shares, 25.8% below Friday.

Main technical conclusion: the QQQ uptrend is intact on all three horizons and the breakout has been confirmed by a second session, with breadth now 1.5 points from confirming the medium term. Falling volume is the main caveat; the 747.53–749.08 cluster is the support that keeps the breakout valid.

Fundamental Analysis

September ISM Services came in at 54.9 against 55.0 expected on October 5. Business activity slowed to 56.5 from 61.7, but the prices index rose to 74.0 and employment moved back above 50, to 50.1.

The long end kept rising. The 10-year Treasury yield closed 3 bp higher at 5.31% (+7 bp over five sessions), the 30-year at 5.66% and the 10-year real yield at 2.95%, while the 2-year was little changed at 4.84%. Treasury auctions of 3-, 10- and 30-year notes and the FOMC minutes follow on October 6–8.

Equities ignored rates on a wave of M&A, led by Schneider Electric's agreed acquisition of PTC. With the S&P 500 forward P/E at 19.0 (FactSet), the forward earnings yield of 5.26% now sits 0.05 pp below the 10-year. Four-week forward EPS revisions remain strong at +1.30%, and high-yield spreads tightened 14 bp to 310 bp on October 2.

Main fundamental conclusion: the scorecard holds at −5 of ±14 on six of seven components, a moderately unfavorable backdrop. Earnings revisions remain the principal offset; real rates, a negative equity risk premium and the oil reading continue to weigh, while credit has moved further from the threshold that would tip the scorecard to unfavorable.

Volatility

Regime. Implied volatility rose with the market on October 5. QQQ set a second straight record close, yet VIX rose 0.21 to 15.52 and VIX9D 0.79 to 12.85, while VXN gained 0.50 to 21.70, widening the Nasdaq premium over the broad market to 6.18 points.

Short versus long volatility. VIX/VIX3M rose to 0.862, inside the Normal band and further from the Calm boundary; VIX9D/VIX rose to 0.828 ahead of Wednesday's FOMC minutes and 10-year auction. Futures moved the other way: October VX settled at 17.456 (−0.192), narrowing the premium over spot to 1.94.

Nasdaq volatility. QQQ 30-day implied volatility rose 0.27 points to 19.07% while 10-day realized fell to 11.00%, a gap of 8.07 points; the premium over 20-day realized is 3.91 points. The call wing led: the 10Δ call gained 0.82 points and skew narrowed to +4.11 points. The October 9 weekly straddle implies ±1.35%.

Principal warning. On our model, net GEX rose to +$4.48 billion per 1% move and QQQ closed 1.51% above zero gamma at 744.98 — gamma is positive and the cushion is thicker: modeled GEX stays positive on a 1% decline and turns negative near −2%. The lower edge of the weekly expected range (745.98) sits almost on zero gamma; a close below 741.26 would place the market in negative gamma. Put wall 725 and call wall 760 are model estimates, not observed positions.
