Fundamental Analysis

For the trading session ended October 5, 2026

1. Rates & cost of capital

UST 2Y 4.84% (+1 bp d/d, -8 bp over 5 sessions), 5Y 5.06% (0 bp d/d, 0 bp over 5 sessions), 10Y 5.31% (+3 bp d/d, +7 bp over 5 sessions), 30Y 5.66% (+3 bp d/d, +10 bp over 5 sessions). 10Y real 2.95% (+3 bp, +5 bp), 10Y breakeven 2.36% (unchanged), 2s10s 47 bp (prior 45). Five-session base: Sep 28. According to TheStreet, long-end yields closed at 52-week highs. The curve is steepening from the long end: over five sessions the 2-year fell 8 bp while the 10- and 30-year rose 7 and 10 bp. The daily rise in the 10-year was entirely real yield — the market is demanding more term premium rather than pricing inflation. Ahead of the 3-, 10- and 30-year auctions (Oct 6–8, $119bn in total) this is the main source of pressure on duration assets.

2. Fed

Target range 3.75–4.00% after a 25 bp hike on Sep 16. The three-meeting rate path from fed funds futures settlement is n/a (CME data unavailable from the cloud), so the component is excluded. The Fed calendar showed no Fed speakers on Oct 5. Vice Chair for Supervision Bowman speaks on regulation and supervision on Oct 6 at 08:10 ET; the minutes of the Sep 15–16 meeting are released on Oct 7 at 14:00 ET. Absent new Fed signals, rates are waiting for the minutes, which will show how broad support for the September hike was and whether further tightening was discussed. The 74.0 ISM services prices reading strengthens the case for those favoring further tightening.

3. Valuation & equity risk premium

S&P 500 forward P/E 19.0 (FactSet, Oct 2 edition, as of the Sep 30 close; 5-yr avg 19.8, 10-yr avg 19.1), forward earnings yield 5.26%. ERP (EY − 10Y) -0.05 pp (prior -0.02); EY − real 10Y +2.31 pp. The next FactSet edition is due Oct 9; the S&P 500 has risen since Sep 30, so the actual multiple on Oct 5 is above 19.0 — the calculation uses the latest published value. Nasdaq-100 forward P/E: n/a. The equity risk premium remains negative and has moved further from neutral: the 10-year would need to fall to 5.26% (-5 bp) to bring ERP back to zero. Equities yield less than the risk-free rate; valuation rests on earnings-growth expectations alone.

4. Earnings

FactSet (Oct 2 edition) expects S&P 500 EPS growth of 29.5% in Q3, 27.6% in Q4, 32.4% for CY2026 and 15.8% for CY2027. Forward 12-month EPS is up 9.3% since June 30 vs 7.9% in the Sep 4 edition — a four-week revision of +1.30%. Q3 guidance: 44 negative, 72 positive — the highest number of positive guidances since FactSet began tracking in 2006. 16 companies have reported: 14 beat on EPS, 12 on revenue. Nasdaq-100 aggregate revisions: n/a. Earnings revisions remain the only strongly positive scorecard component (+2); Q3 reporting season begins in the coming weeks.

5. Credit

HY OAS 310 bp, IG OAS 85 bp (FRED, latest Oct 2). HY -14 bp on the day, +17 bp over 5 sessions and +45 bp over 20; IG -1 bp, +4 bp and +4 bp. After last week's widening, high-yield spreads tightened 14 bp on Friday — credit partly followed equities. The 20-session change eased to +45 bp: the buffer to the -2 threshold (+75 bp) is now 30 bp vs 17 bp in the previous issue. Oct 5 data are not yet published.

6. Commodities & dollar

Session settlements for Brent and WTI are n/a. Media reports diverge (unverified): Investrade — WTI $89.43 (-1.84%), Brent $100.32 (-1.89%); Yahoo Finance — Brent settled just above $100; TheStreet — WTI $90.68, Brent $102.90. The scorecard uses EIA spot via FRED, dated Sep 29 (not updated since): Brent $113.96, +26.97% over 20 sessions; WTI $96.16 (+10.49%). DXY: n/a; per Investrade, EUR/USD 1.1205 (a 17-month low for the euro) and USD/JPY 158.08. Oil is reported near $100 Brent, well below the Sep 29 spot price behind the scorecard. The oil component stays at -2 until FRED updates EIA spot; if spot lands near the levels reported in the media, the 20-session change could fall below +15% (component -1). A stronger dollar is an additional tightening of financial conditions.

Source: Investrade Market Review, Oct 5. Consensus for ISM sub-indices and S&P Global PMIs: n/a. Services are growing more slowly (business activity 56.5 vs 61.7), but price pressure is building: prices paid at 74.0, after 77.9 in ISM Manufacturing last week. The rebound in employment (50.1) tempers Friday's soft labor-market read. For rates the mix is unfavorable: slower growth without disinflation.

8. Corporate events

S&P 500 +0.66% (7,773.95), Nasdaq-100 +0.87% (31,076.44, record), Nasdaq Composite +1.05% (27,477.31, record), Dow +0.18% (51,267.90), Russell 2000 +0.50% (2,847.14) (Yahoo Finance, Investrade, TheStreet). Technology and communications led; consumer discretionary lagged (Investrade). Deals: Schneider Electric is acquiring PTC for $205 a share (42.3% premium; PTC +33%), C.H. Robinson is acquiring RXO ($5.8bn EV; CHRW -10.85%), Flex is spinning off Axiom ($37.5bn valuation), Cenovus is acquiring Athabasca Oil. NDX top 10: SPCX +7.63%, TSLA +2.20%, NVDA +2.12%, AVGO +2.08%, META +1.90%, MSFT +1.48%, GOOGL +0.86%, AMZN -0.05%, AAPL -0.24%. Nike -2.88% (TheStreet). M&A and megacap gains (SPCX, TSLA, NVDA, AVGO) carried the indices to records despite higher yields; per Yahoo Finance, the S&P 500 is within 0.3% of its summer high.

9. Fundamental Scorecard

Fundamental Market Health:Moderately Unfavorable (-5 of ±14; 6 of 7 components scored)
ComponentReadingScore
ERP (EY − 10Y), pp-0.05-1

Fed pricing, next 3 meetings, bpn/aexcluded
Brent, 20 sessions, % (EIA spot, as of Sep 29)+26.97-2
Total (6 of 7 components)-5 → Moderately Unfavorable

The total is unchanged, but the buffers shifted: credit gained room (30 bp to the -2 threshold vs 17 bp), while ERP moved further into negative territory. The nearest chance of an improvement is a FRED update of the oil spot price.

11. What Would Change the Regime

  • If the 10Y closes at or below 5.26% (ERP non-negative), then the ERP component improves to 0 and the total to -4.
  • If FRED updates EIA spot and the 20-session Brent change is within +15%, then the oil component improves to -1 and the total to -4.
  • If the 20-session change in HY OAS exceeds +75 bp (now +45 bp), then the credit component falls to -2 and the total to -6 — Unfavorable.
  • If the five-session rise in the 10Y exceeds +20 bp (now +7 bp), then the rates-change component falls to -2 and the total to -6.
