Lower Volatility Outweighed the Market Move

The day ended positive for the account: short volatility and time decay offset the market pressure of the morning.

The session opened lower, and the drawdown deepened toward midday. At about the same time the account turned positive, with its best level reached in the second half of the day. Part of the position was restructured during the session.

Volatility was the main driver of the day: implied volatility on the position declined, which worked strongly in favor of short volatility. Time also helped noticeably through premium decay. Against the backdrop of a rising Nasdaq-100, the directional market move and its sharpness weighed slightly on the position, but not enough to outweigh the other forces.

Tomorrow's calendar includes the Fed minutes and the 10-year Treasury auction; volatility behavior will remain the main reference point for the position.

Technical Analysis

Nasdaq set a third consecutive record on October 6. QQQ rose 0.46% to a record close of 759.66 after an all-time intraday high of 762.86, and the Nasdaq-100 gained 0.48% to 31,224.69; the S&P 500 gained 0.58% to a record 7,818.93 and SPY 0.55% to 779.09. QQQ gapped higher and left the 756.92–759.10 gap open, but closed in the lower part of its range.

QQQ is 3.82% above its 20-day (731.71), more than three ATRs, 5.54% above its 50-day (719.81) and 13.36% above its 200-day, with both shorter averages rising faster than on Monday. RSI(14) stands at 69.9, a new high alongside price, just below overbought.

Participation narrowed again. Equal-weight QQEW gained only 0.08% and QQEW/QQQ is down 1.14% over five sessions; the share of Nasdaq-100 members above their 50-day was unchanged at 48.51%. In the S&P 500 the share above the 20-day rose to 43.40%, and the Russell 2000 fell 0.57%.

Main technical conclusion: the QQQ uptrend is intact on all three horizons, but the index is stretched and closed on the 760 call wall with narrowing participation. The open gap at 756.92–759.10 is first support; the 747.25–749.08 cluster is the level that keeps the breakout valid.

Fundamental Analysis

Treasury yields eased from multi-year highs on October 6. The 10-year yield fell 4 bp to 5.27%, the 2-year 5 bp to 4.79% and the 10-year real yield 4 bp to 2.91%, with the 10-year breakeven unchanged at 2.36%. A $58 billion 3-year auction cleared at 4.932%.

The August trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion against $102.0 billion expected, the largest since March 2025, but rates and equities looked past it. The S&P 500 set a record on expectations for third-quarter earnings growth near 30%; four-week forward EPS revisions stand at +1.30% (FactSet).

With the S&P 500 forward P/E at 19.0, the forward earnings yield of 5.26% is now 0.01 pp below the 10-year — the equity risk premium is close to zero. High-yield spreads widened 2 bp to 312 bp on October 5 and are 44 bp wider over 20 sessions.

Main fundamental conclusion: the scorecard improved to −4 from −5 on six of seven components, still a moderately unfavorable backdrop. The 10-year's five-session change returned to neutral; earnings revisions remain the principal offset, while real rates, a zero equity risk premium, wider credit and the oil reading continue to weigh.

Volatility

Regime. Implied volatility fell with the market at a record on October 6. QQQ closed at a third straight record, while VIX fell 0.51 to 15.01, VIX9D 0.82 to 12.03 and VXN 0.55 to 21.15; the Nasdaq premium over the broad market held at 6.14 points.

Short versus long volatility. VIX/VIX3M fell to 0.851 (0.8509 exact), still Normal but a hair above the 0.85 Calm boundary; a VIX close below 14.99 would change the regime. VIX9D/VIX fell to 0.801, so the market is pricing almost no event premium for Wednesday's FOMC minutes and 10-year auction. October VX settled 0.374 lower at 17.082.

Nasdaq volatility. QQQ 30-day implied volatility fell 0.44 points to 18.63%; 10-day realized is 10.59%, a gap of 8.04 points, and the premium over 20-day realized narrowed to 3.51 points. The front and the put wing led the decline: the Oct 9 expiry lost 0.65 points, the 10Δ put 0.94 points and the 10Δ call only 0.25, narrowing skew to +3.82 points. The October 9 weekly straddle implies ±1.12%.

Principal warning. On our model, net GEX rose to +$5.75 billion per 1% move and QQQ closed 1.66% above zero gamma at 747.25 — gamma is positive and modeled GEX stays positive on a 1% decline. QQQ closed on the 760 call wall, where the model points to dampened upside; a close below 750.99 makes gamma transitional, below 743.51 negative. Call wall 760 and put wall 725 are model estimates, not observed positions.
