1. Rates & cost of capital
| UST (Treasury) | Oct 8 | 1 session | 5 sessions | Oct 7 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2Y | 4.75% | −2 bp | −3 bp | 4.77% |
| 5Y | 4.99% | −4 bp | −2 bp | 5.03% |
| 10Y | 5.22% | −6 bp | −2 bp | 5.28% |
| 30Y | 5.60% | −7 bp | −1 bp | 5.67% |
| 10Y real (TIPS) | 2.87% | −5 bp | −1 bp | 2.92% |
| 10Y breakeven | 2.35% | −1 bp | — | 2.36% |
| 2s10s | 47 bp | −4 bp | — | 51 bp |
The five-session base is October 1. The $22 billion 30-year auction cleared at 5.618% against a 5.617% when-issued level (0.1 bp tail); bid-to-cover was 2.54 (average 2.41), indirects took 72.32% (average 69.1%), directs 20.89% and dealers 6.79% (average 10.3%). According to Investrade, the 10-year touched 5.35% intraday before closing lower. The curve flattened from the long end, with 2s10s narrowing to 47 bp; demand for the 30-year was above average, though without a stop-through. The 5 bp decline in the real yield was the session's main relief for valuations.
2. Fed
The target range is 3.75–4.00% (since September 17). Governor Waller (Istanbul) said that if the data come in as expected he anticipates "additional hikes to support a timelier return of inflation to our 2 percent goal", that the hikes "do not need to come at consecutive meetings", and that his main concern is rising inflation expectations. Musalem said "more monetary policy firming will be required" and that rates "ought to be going up in the next 6 to 9 months", describing the labor market as balanced. Market-implied pricing for the next three meetings is n/a (CME 30-Day Fed Funds settlement is blocked from the cloud); the component is excluded. Both speeches reinforced the hiking bias after the September minutes, yet yields fell across the curve — the shift in market expectations cannot be measured without ZQ data.
3. Valuation & equity risk premium
S&P 500 forward P/E is 19.0 (FactSet, as of September 30; five-year average 19.8, ten-year 19.1), a forward earnings yield of 5.26%. ERP = EY − 10Y = +0.04 pp (prior −0.02); EY − 10Y real = 2.39 pp (prior 2.34). Nasdaq-100 forward P/E is n/a (no verified source). The premium returned to positive territory purely on rates — valuation is unchanged, the 10-year fell. The cushion is minimal: a rise of more than 4 bp in the 10-year would turn ERP negative again.
4. Earnings
FactSet (October 2): expected S&P 500 earnings growth is 29.5% for Q3 2026, 27.6% for Q4, 32.4% for 2026 and 15.8% for 2027. Forward 12-month EPS revisions over four weeks: +1.30%. Q3 guidance: 72 positive, 44 negative. Of 16 companies reported, 14 beat on EPS and 12 on revenue. Nasdaq-100 aggregate revisions are n/a. The next FactSet edition (October 9) had not been published at the time of compilation.
5. Credit
| FRED, as of Oct 7 | Value | 1 day | 5 sessions | 20 sessions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HY OAS | 309 bp | +6 | −3 | +38 |
| IG OAS | 82 bp | −1 | −2 | +1 |
High-yield spreads widened again after tightening the prior day; at +38 bp over the month, credit does not confirm equity indices near their highs. FRED has not yet published October 8.
6. Commodities & dollar
FRED (EIA spot) has not updated since October 6: Brent $125.44 (+18.21% over 20 sessions), WTI $96.24 (+2.15%). According to Investrade, WTI settled at $91.49 on October 8 (+$3.21, +3.64%) and Brent last traded at $104.28 (+$4.08) on tanker attacks and Iran-related risks; CME/ICE settlements are not verified. December gold rose 0.39% to $4,157.00. DXY is n/a (no verified close; no substitute index). Oil remains the main external risk to inflation expectations — the concern Waller highlighted. The Brent component is scored on EIA spot as of October 6.
7. Macro data
| Release | Actual | Consensus | Prior | Surprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Initial jobless claims | 197k | 200k | 199k | −3k; continuing 1.716mn (cons. 1.708mn) |
| 30-year auction | 5.618%, bid-to-cover 2.54 | WI 5.617% | n/a | neutral: 0.1 bp tail |
| Wholesale inventories (Aug) | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a |
The labor market remains tight (claims below 200k), consistent with Musalem's assessment and giving the Fed no reason to ease. Rate impact was neutral: yields fell alongside technology stocks.
8. Corporate events
Indices: S&P 500 −0.47% (7,765.36), Nasdaq-100 −1.39% (30,725.81); according to Investrade, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.25%, the Dow rose 0.10% and the Russell 2000 0.03%. The AI complex came under pressure after reports that OpenAI's annualized revenue at the end of September was about $50 billion versus the $70 billion previously reported; AVGO (−4.35%), NVDA (−2.94%) and MSFT (−1.35%) declined. Broadcom is reportedly seeking more than $50 billion of financing for OpenAI's custom chips. PepsiCo: core EPS $2.34 (est. $2.29), revenue $25.27 billion (est. $24.96 billion), organic growth 3.1% (est. 3.8%); full-year core EPS growth guidance cut to 2.5–3.5% from 5–7%. Early Investrade sector data: energy +2.61%, consumer staples +1.27%, health care −1.91%. The session split the market: questions about AI funding hit Nasdaq mega-caps while energy and defensives rose — a rotation within the market rather than a de-rating of the whole S&P 500.
